Mother Teresa was a Catholic nun and missionary who dedicated her life to helping the poor and sick in India. She was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia. She joined the Sisters of Loreto at the age of 18 and took the name Sister Mary Teresa.
In 1948, Mother Teresa received a calling from God to work with the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, a religious congregation that provides care for those in abject poverty, hunger, and illness.
Throughout her life, Mother Teresa worked tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of the poor and marginalized. She received numerous awards for her humanitarian work, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997, but her legacy lives on through the Missionaries of Charity and the countless lives she touched through her love and compassion. She was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 2016.
